When Dudu Mncube’s employers left for a 6 month sabbatical in Germany Dudu decided to teach herself how to sew.

When Heike and Norbert Muhlbacher, a pair of Pastors, returned they were amazed by the embroidery she was producing and decided to set up a community based sewing project. In this way Sukumani, a faith-based empowerment project, funded by the Lutherian Development Services came about.

Dudu continues to be the driving force behind this enterprise and draws upon the skills of her team of embrioderers and the wider Lubombo and Christian communities.

Working mainly with single mothers in an area where sugar-cane production dominates near the Mozambique border Sukumani is a special project. All of the work carries a card outlining which of the skilled artisans has created the piece, a lovely connection to the creative source.
